Let's Face It 2022

One thing I love almost as much as making art and sharing it with other art lovers is taking art classes, courses, workshops, retreats, etc. They can be addictive. And I've tried to rein it in a little. Some people ask why anyone who already has an established art career would still pay to take classes. Well.... Believe it or not, there are a few successful artists who enjoy taking classes. One huge reason.... Connection.  Being an artist "can" be a lonely existence. We're often working from home, or in a studio space.... alone. We may see other artists and friends at exhibitions and receptions, but those are few and far between in the big picture of the day to day work of it all. My dog is great company, but she's not much of a conversationalist. LOL. The online art community is wonderful. It's where I started. It's encouraging and empowering. These are the pioneers who took what once belonged to an elite few, and opened it up to everyone.

I love my local art community as well. But especially in these  years of global pandemic and mass quarantines, we were isolated from each other. My online community kept me ignited and growing.

I may have a grasp of most of the art techniques I need for my work, but I learn at least one new piece of the puzzle every time I take a class. I scratch here. A scribble there. A new medium. A new surface. I also enjoy dabbling in techniques I wouldn't normally use. Last month, I shared about my first digital portrait. I was so excited to actually learn from someone who is accomplished in that work. It helped me understand things deeper. It helped me to take a leap I never would have on my own.

There are a couple of art sites I really enjoy and have gone back to time and again to take new classes. Kara Bullock is one of those. It's hard to put into words why I love her site and her community so much. Kara is REAL. She is approachable. She is talented. And kind. And brave. And humble. I love that about her. It's not exactly headline news to say that there are a few in the art world who can be pretentious. You won't find that on Kara's site. Often, she reminds us that she is learning alongside of us. Her guest teachers are always kind, honest.... real. Some are world renowned. Some are like.... "I'm not sure what the f*ck I'm doing here." LOL. It is so refreshing. And they are AMAZING. Some of the best teachers are the ones who think they don't know enough to teach. They remember the small details. They stumble and fix. So... we learn how to fix when we stumble.

This is 52 weeks plus a few bonus live lessons! Seriously!!!

Confession.... I have not been able to keep up with doing each week's lesson. But I watch them and I find the ones I really want to explore. They will remain available even after the year is long over, so I have plenty of time to do them all in my own time. It's never too late to sign up! Join in!!!
